Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Picture of Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the RingOK, I'm a bit biased -- this is the best movie I have ever seen. Usually when I have high expectations before seeing a movie, I walk away being disappointed. However, even though I had ultra-high expectations for this movie, I walked away stunned and amazed how great it was.

First of all, I should give credit to JRR Tolkien for writing such a great epic tale of good and evil. The "Lord of the Rings" trilogy had to come to the big screen some day, and fortunately it came at a great time, with the necessary technology and actors to do the story justice. The producers, screenwriters, and actors did a great job of making the books come to life.

"The Fellowship of the Ring" is the first of the three movies and introduces the setting and most of the characters. It is in this movie that the "Fellowship" is created. The members of the Fellowship vow to journey together to destroy the ring that has the power to give evil control over all of Middle Earth. The journey is certainly not an easy one, as the path involves caves, forests, and mountains filled with orcs, beasts, and other villians. The constant struggle between good and evil is the life of this powerful movie.

The special effects of this movie could be referred to as just the "special effect," since the entire movie is encapsulated in layer upon layer of computer generated backgrounds and effects. The production artists somehow managed to create a seamless reality between the actual film and computer effects, making scenes that are simply breathtaking.

While the special effects in "The Fellowship of the Ring" are second to none, I was most impressed with the character development in the movie. The building of the Fellowship alone was a climatic moment. All the actors were strikingly true to their character in dress, speech, and action. To me, watching the Fellowship come together was like watching nations around the world join together for one good cause.

Watching the loyalty and sacrifice of the characters for their fellow comrades is an emotional experience. Aragorn and Legolas prove to be the leaders of the Fellowship, along with Gandalf, the old and wise wizard. But each character is given enough attention that after awhile, I felt like I knew each one. This kind of character development is paramount to making a meaningful movie, and the screenwriters did an excellent job with this one.

The action scenes in "The Fellowship of the Ring" were superb and well-choreographed. The plot moved along well, and the constantly changing setting kept the movie interesting. A beautiful soundtrack added to the feeling of each scene. From start to finish, this was an amazing movie that set the bar high for all adventure movies to follow.

Best Scene: Near the end of the movie, Aragorn is on top of the hill preparing to face the hordes of Orcs that have come to meet him. He is alone with only his sword, and as he turns to face the enemy, a slight smile crosses his face.
Pros
Beautiful storyline, excellent character development. Breathtaking cinemetography and special effects. Beautiful soundtrack. Great, believable action scenes.
Cons
