The Sharpened Movie Review
Hitch (Will Smith, Kevin James)
Although "Hitch" is a typical romantic comedy, it manages to avoid many of the cliches associated with the genre. Most romantic comedies are predictable and lack innovative storylines. They have basic plots that are just strong enough to give the movies a sense of direction. Fortunately, "Hitch" does not succumb to these stereotypes, as it provides an interesting plot as well as some unexpected twists.
One of the reasons I liked "Hitch" is because I thought I had the entire movie figured out after seven minutes, but I really didn't. Unexpected events and changes in the characters' relationships led me to be genuinely surprised at different points in the movie. One of the biggest surprises for me was that Will Smith, who plays Hitch, turned out to be a much different character than I expected him to be.
The plot of the movie revolves around Hitch trying to help a frustrated bachelor named Albert (played by Kevin James - the guy from "King of Queens") remedy his relationship woes. However, there are a number of subplots that keep the movie interesting and of course find a way to come together as the movie progresses. Though I thought I had figured out how the multiple plots would find resolution early on in the movie, as I mentioned, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I was wrong.
Besides the movie's non-predictability, I really enjoyed the acting in this film. And no, I am not kidding. Will Smith and Kevin James both showed up with believable performances. The two main women in the movie, Sara (Eva Mendes) and Allegra (Amber Valletta), also did a decent job, but it was the acting of Will Smith and Kevin James that really impressed me. Part of my being impressed is likely due to my low expectations for the acting in romantic comedies. But both actors did a great job of playing their roles and making the humorous parts of the movie funny. The chemistry between the two characters was surprisingly strong and it was great to see how the relationship between the two evolved over the course of the movie.
"Hitch" is a worthwhile comedy for all ages. It should be especially enjoyable to those who have experienced the trials of beginning a relationship with a member of the opposite sex. Whether you like romantic comedies or not, "Hitch" is worth checking out. |
