MPEG-4 is an ISO/IEC standard developed by MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group). It is a video format based on the previous MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 standards. The MPEG-4 standard was developed for digital television, interactive graphics, and interactive multimedia applications.
MPEG-4 represents audiovisual content as “media objects." The composition of these objects is defined in the MPEG-4 file, which can be used to create a complex audiovisual scene. The data is saved in a format that makes it easy to send over a network, including the Internet.
Most MPEG-4 video files use the .MP4 file extension.
